Medieval Weekend and Owain Glyndwr Pageant. There was discussion on the weekend events which clashed with the Churches Together in Presteigne. The clash could have been avoided if the Town Diary had been used. This is a facility which was generally under used, but something that the Development Officer should address in a co-ordinating capacity.
The funding committee should meet at the earliest opportunity - Lesley Wootton had spoken to Harvey Rose of PAVO (Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations) for details on funds available for administration. The leaflets were given to Secretary to take up with Treasurer.
AJG proposed, IW seconded and forum agreed that the balance of funds in the old Tourism account be transferred to Knighton Tourism 2000 Ken Harris agreed to investigate community enablement grants which might be available. This might be the same awarding department that PAVO were to investigate.
Knighton Tourism 2000 The Medieval Weekend and Pageant was likely to have a surplus of income over expenditure. The weekend was generally well received and a congratulatory letter from Swansea had been received. Reactions from American tourists was that the weekend was "brilliant". Costumes were well received and Knighton Tourism 2000 want to repeat the event next year. Phillip Price was generous in his praise of the Committee. There was criticism of Publicity. This was largely unfounded as there had been extensive coverage in all newspapers, but accepted that this could be improved with the addition of street banners. The Community Support project were to be thanked for all their hard work. Copy of letter attached.
take pART It was commented that 50 artists from all parts of the country including local groups would be exhibiting in and around Knighton. Special events to be staged would be Desert Island Art. There would be children’s workshops, pavement art, Chinese landscape and a painting challenge. In total some 15 different events over the week. Islwyn Watkins is already planning 2001 event
Knighton Town Refurbishment The finger posts are ready for erection. These will be situated at Bowling Green Lane junction with Ludlow Road, Brookside Square, Clock Tower and Recycling Centre The Obelisk to commemorate the starting point for the Glyndwr Way was to be placed in The Narrows. This had not been commissioned and there was discussion on the funding of the stone. Lesley Wootton agreed to approach Jonathan Protheroe to establish cost of such obelisk and preference of stone in the manufacture. The opening of the path and the dedication of the stone put back again to September.
General Tourism Matters AJG to draft a letter (attached) to Mrs Price adding support to her proposal to create a campsite AJG to write to Welsh Tourist Board objecting to the policy to small non verified accommodation providers (letter attached)
St Edward’s Church invited Beguildy Ministry to join with them in a fund raising event. They invited Bethell College Woodwind ensemble to play in concert in Knighton and Brecon. The orchestra was provided with accommodation and meals and raised a small sum of money for the local Churches and Cathedral. The ensemble was very professional and well received.
New Initiatives or developments AJG suggested a Dry Ski Slope on Panpunton Hill with restaurant facility powered by water wheel from River Teme. PP suggested Picnic Area and walk in Knisley Wood - PP agreed to investigate. It was generally agreed that the River Teme was an under used resource as is the Bryn-y-Castell site.
Forthcoming events Weekend 5/6 May 2001 - Churches together in Wales - musical event with dance and drama It was noted that Reverend Roger Moore presents his apologies as not able to attend meeting in July
There being no further business, the meeting was closed.
